A bit like reading the newspapers you've put down to protect the carpet when you're painting walls.

Not just me that does that then?

I can speak with some authority on the painfulness of pinched plums.

Meanwhile, I love finding old newspapers stuck under carpets. (For the benefits of the affluent, these are known as underlay, in the poorer parts of the north of England.)

What could be better while ripping up the old shag-pile to be diverted by John Major's resignation?

Re:small joys 1 Month ago
When the first small person of the next generation of our family arrived, I had no idea what to do to mark the occasion, and was hundreds of miles away. So I ran out and bought a newspaper, which I stashed, unread, in the bottom of a drawer. There it stayed, through 5 house-moves. I joked that we'd give it to her when she turned 18. Well last week (along with something a bit more "conventional") we did!

drifting with a good friend on the current under a bright blue sky. First out with the tide and then back in again. Even remembered the sunscreen this time so no nasty after effects.

There is nothing, abolutely nothing, half so worth doing as simply messing around in boats

Re:small joys 1 Month ago
Yesterday as part of my job I delivered a bunch of flowers, a birthday card and a couple of pounds of cherries to a lady in the next village. She was delighted but a bit over burdened so I leaned over to shut the front door for her, she thought I was bending down to kiss her so gave me a peck on the cheek. I was so touched I kissed her back. Sorry but I love my job.
